The mission & the thesis

Raising capable kids.

Build Useful Things is a one-man workshop with one job: help raise kids who can think, do hard things, and keep learning for the rest of their lives. This page is the why behind everything on the site.

The mission

I have seven kids. Everything on this site was built for them first — because something in our house needed fixing, or because I wanted them to have a tool I wish I'd had growing up.

If it works for my family, I clean it up and put it here — free, private, no account, no tracking — for yours. There is no funnel. No "premium tier." The mission isn't marketing for the tools; the tools are the mission, working.

A capable kid, to me, is one who can figure things out, finish hard things, and stay curious about how much they don't know yet. That's the whole target. Everything below is how I think you get there.

The thesis — what I believe
  1. Bet 01

    Capability is built, not born.

Kids don't become capable by being told they're capable. They become capable by doing real, hard things — with feedback, with stakes, with visible results. Every tool here creates reps, not lectures.

  2. Bet 02

Curiosity is the engine. Protect it.

Kids learn fastest when they're chasing their own questions, not when a curriculum is chasing them. Curiosity is the fuel for everything else — feed it, make room for it, and never let a system replace it.

  3. Bet 03

Confidence must be earned through validated performance.

Praise is cheap, and kids know it. Real confidence comes from proof — a rung earned, a score posted, a skill checked off. Something they can point to and say: I did that.

  4. Bet 04

    Humility keeps the loop honest.

The kid who thinks they've arrived stops growing. Test it, measure it, be wrong, adjust, and go again. A miss you admit is a gap you can close. Humility isn't low self-esteem — it's the thing that keeps improvement running.

  5. Bet 05

Tools should be free, private, and actually work.

Capability belongs to the person using it. No account walls, no tracking, no lock-in, no hype. A tool that doesn't do the thing it says it does, on the day you open it, doesn't ship.

How it all connects

The mission is the target. The thesis is the set of bets. The rest of the site is those bets, made concrete:

The pillars

What every kid needs

Curiosity, confidence, humility — three bets from the thesis, turned into the design spec for everything here.

The three pillars →
The method

How the loop runs

Think before you build; then test small, measure honestly, control what works, pivot what doesn't. Humility, as a practice.

The method →
The toolkit

The proof

Five working tools — skills, money, reading, learning, method. Free, private, built to be used. The mission, running.
